Frequently Asked Questions
Physiotherapists are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of pain, disease or injuries. We love helping people improve their health and wellbeing, returning to sport, daily function or a new specific goal.Â
Specifically at Moko Physiotherapy, we specialise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, which is the most well known area of physiotherapy. There are also neurological and cardiorespiratory specialisms. We may be able to help in these other areas, as some of our team have prior experience in these other areas.Â
Physiotherapy treatment may involve exercise, rehabilitation, stretching, strengthening, balance, massage, taping or hands on. Treatment varies depending on your individual problem. Currently we do not offer shockwave therapy or ultrasound.Â
No, physiotherapists are not medical doctors, although some physiotherapists may choose to undertake a PHD which is a high level qualification that enables them to call themselves a Doctor of Physiotherapy. However, this is not the same as a medical doctor.
The physiotherapy degree is usually a 3 year course to qualify as a physiotherapist and register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You must be registered with the HCPC to call yourself a physiotherapist.Â
Loose clothing is useful (rather than jeans for example). Ideally we need to see the area so if you have knee pain then please wear shorts. For ladies if you have a shoulder or neck problem, please wear a vest top. If the physio cannot see the area, you may be asked to undress to your underwear, but this is only if you feel comfortable in doing so. You may bring a friend / family with you to act as a chaperone if you would prefer.Â
Every individual has specific needs.
All new physiotherapy patients are required to have an assessment (45 minutes) and results session (45 minutes). Routinely we would do the assessment and results sessions in the same week.Â
Follow ups typically last 40 minutes.
The rehabilitation classes, yoga and pilates classes are either 45 or 60 minutes.
Sports or therapeutic massage can either be booked for 60, 45 or 30 minute appointments.
The educational workshops are 90 minutes.
Yes, physiotherapy is a great treatment for arthritis. This may include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory conditions such as psoriatic arthritis. Treatment is likely to include rehabilitation to work on the movement and strength in the surrounding muscles which support the affected joint.
Yes, physiotherapy is very successful in treating sciatica. This may involve bespoke stretching, referral to massage and then graded rehabilitation to prevent the sciatica returning. It is normal for sciatica to take 3 months to settle.Â
Yes, physiotherapy treatment often helps neck pain. This may involve bespoke stretching, referral to massage and then graded rehabilitation to prevent the neck pain returning.
Yes, the most common condition that we see at physiotherapy is back pain. We have great success in helping individuals recover quickly and then prevent the pain returning again in the future. Treatment may involve bespoke stretching, hands on, referral to massage and then graded strengthening to prevent the neck pain returning.
