Sciatica Treatment Derby
We help people to reduce pain from sciatica and improve daily living.
Sciatica is a generic term for irritation of the sciatic nerve. There are many different causes of sciatica, including back pain, disc herniations, pregnancy and buttock pain, to name a few. It typically causes nerve pain (sharp, shooting pain) down the back or side of one leg and may also present with symptoms such as, pins and needles or numbness, and possibly muscle weakness. You may hear the term âtrapped nerveâ which in most cases is technically incorrect, as often the nerve is just a little irritated. This is very common and often not anything to worry about. However, if you do have these symptoms, particularly if they are worsening, we would recommend an assessment from one of our physiotherapists.
We are experts in helping people with back pain and sciatica. It is the most common condition that we treat. All of our therapists are trained by Katie, the clinical lead, who presented her research at the British Spine Conference in 2021.
Understanding Sciatica
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, running from your lower back down each leg, is irritated or compressed. This can lead to the following:
- Sharp, shooting pain
- Numbness
- Tingling, or muscle weakness along the nerveâs path, most commonly on one sideÂ
Causes of sciatica vary widely and include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, pregnancy, or tight muscles in the buttocks. While sciatica can be painful and disruptive, it often improves with the right combination of treatment and self-care. Early assessment and tailored physiotherapy can help reduce symptoms, improve mobility, and prevent future flare-ups.
