Muscle strains come under the umbrella term ‘soft tissue injury.’ Other soft tissues also include tendons and ligaments. Muscle strains present as pain or injury to the muscle belly itself, often through a specific incident, such as, sprinting for the bus. There are different grades of strain, which our physiotherapists can assess and advise.
Common strains that we see include, calf, hamstring and hip flexor strains.
Treatment is dependent on the time in relation to the injury. Initially, we may recommend relative rest to allow any inflammation and swelling to settle. But as soon as appropriate, we often recommend graded movement and exercise. Our initial focus may be about regaining movement, followed by building strength and then towards normal function. Massage may be recommended by your physiotherapist. Our plan will have your end goal in mind, right from the start.
Saw Katie recently after experiencing ankle pain and was impressed. She’s very professional and thorough, and is clearly an expert.

Katie is brilliant. I went to her with aches and pains in my hip after a car accident. I felt completely at ease and supported by her, and trusted her professional opinion. Definitely recommend.
